No Better Hope is an unusual survey of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington and is highly recommended for grades 3-5: it provides a fine survey of this symbol of national unity, covering the development of the Memorial, those involved in its creation, and Lincoln's place in history. While this book is written for boaters who land and then might do a dayhike, it is a great guide to the state and county parks in the San Juan Islands, Skagit and Island counties and areas on the water in the Olympic Pennisula. A solid book that delivers information on areas that are not widely known.

The Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act (NREPA) was developed in response to federal government spending on land management that was jeopardizing the existence of numerous species in the Rocky Mountain region from Yellowstone to Glacier National Parks. It quickly gained the support of over 800 independent businesses, conservation groups, and Native American religious groups.

NREPA has earned bipartisan political support. Members of both major political parties are sponsors who have introduced NREPA in the US House of Representatives. Former president Jimmy Carter has endorsed it. So has political columnist James Kilpatrick, and Pulitzer prize-winning poet Gary Snyder. Numerous scientists including the Craighead family, famed for its grizzly bear research, support NREPA for its promising potential to cut risk of extinction of the grizzly bears of Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

Despite bipartisan political support and scientific support for NREPA, political opposition from wealthy industries has stalled its passage through Congress. The oil-gas, mining, logging, and motorsports industries want access to the acreage that NREPA would protect for a wide variety of other economic and environmental purposes. But a growing base of support across America is putting pressure on politicians to listen to the grassroots instead of the mighty lobbyists. Wilderness and many species of wildlife are rare in America nowadays, and NREPA will make sure they don't disappear. This is an excellent piece of wildlife legislation, and an example of how pioneering legislation of this kind should be written.

As exemplified in song by Woodie Guthrie when he extolled the virtues of the great dams on the Columbia River and the subsequent development of irrigated agriculture, man's focus on the Columbia Plateau has been on how it can serve him. Now a new book has emerged that explores the geology, soils, flora and fauna of the region and its shrub-steppe ecosystems. This book serves as primer for all who would seek to understand these natural systems...a starting point for further exploration, both on the ground and in the regional libraries. The book is a gentle reminder of the natural richness of this region and the need to preserve the remaining habitat for future generations so that the land can continue to serve man, but in a different way, enriching our lives through the knowledge that soils derived from the harsh reality of volcanic eruption in conjunction with simple associations of grasses and shrubs can form the basis for a complex and enduring living system.

This is an excellent guide to paddling in the northwest. It is up to date and concise, and includes all the things you want to know when going on a paddling vacation with the family.

An amazing work. I found the chapter Total Penetration Down riveting. A must-read for journalists. Pilgrim is like the cat who ate the canary. Bravo.

The diehard Redskins fan that I am it was very intereseting. The Yearbook was truely an excellent book. There were so many memories it brought back to me. The pictures were great and I loved the whole thing . I enjoyed it very much!!

For anyone interested in this facinating subject...this book is the "bible!" Thank you Betty Monkman for updating this history and for letting "fans of the White House" like me - be able to learn so much! I truly dream of someday having dinner off some of this china!

If you want to read great articles, look at some great photos and illustrations and learn about the current state of our understanding of the civilizations that became what we call the Olmec, then this book is for you. It is simply fascinating stuff for anyone seriously interested in understanding these people.

What a great book! It is refreshing to read a historical guide that doesn't take itself too seriously. On This Spot brings the sights and history to life for us transplated Washingtonians. While the book can be used as a walking tour guide, it can just as easily take you on a tour through history from your living room. Makes me feel like I am in Washington again!
